ABCS RCM delivers experienced medical billing services for busy healthcare professionals. Much of this service provides practitioners the opportunity to expand their medical practices and optimize their overall revenue cycle. With this in mind, our company has been following a bill in the Ohio General Assembly that would have a positive impact on behavioral health professionals. This bill would require insurance providers to cover autism screening and treatment in the state of Ohio.

As of December 2016, both houses of the Ohio General Assembly approved this bill which now officially requires private insurance companies to cover the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The bill was approved at the end of the Assembly’s two-year legislative session, and requires health plan issuers to provide coverage as well as establish minimum coverage requirements for autism. Furthermore, the bill states that insurance providers cannot terminate or deny coverage to someone based solely on an ASD diagnosis.

The bill requires insurance plans to cover speech, language, and occupational therapy for enrollees under age 14. The bill also requires coverage for care or equipment ordered for someone with ASD by a doctor or developmental pediatrician who deems the care or equipment to be “medically necessary.” Ohio Governor John Kasich is expected to sign the bill into law by the end of the year. This new law will impact behavioral health billing as well as the overall Ohio behavioral health community.
