New data from the 2020 Census shows that people are relocating to more densely populated urban areas. However, one of the top-ranked hospitals in Ohio is located in a region that lost population. Will these population trends in the state eventually impact hospital rankings?
New Census Data:
The state of Ohio had a slight increase in population, growing by 2.3 percent to roughly 11.8 million people. From 2010 to 2020, the population of Ohio shifted locations. Out of the state’s 88 counties, 63 percent lost population since 2010. However, some urban centers grew in population.
Most of this population growth was in the Columbus and, to a lesser degree the Cincinnati, metro area. Other urban areas experienced declines in their population. Out of the twelve major Ohio metropolitan areas, only Columbus (+15.08 %) and Cincinnati (+4.17 %) had population growth from 2010 to 2020. The other 10 metropolitan areas experienced declining population trends with the greatest losses occurring in Youngstown (-10.32 %) and Lima (-8.23 %).
The top five Ohio counties with the largest population growth were:
- Delaware County 18.64 percent growth (Central Ohio)
- Union County 16.70 percent growth (Central Ohio)
- Warren County 12.23 percent growth (Southwestern Ohio)
- Franklin 12.12 percent growth (Central Ohio)
- Fairfield 8.03 percent growth (Central Ohio)
The top five Ohio counties with the largest population decline were:
- Harrison County 9.54 percent decline (Eastern Ohio)
- Monroe County 9.39 percent decline (Southeastern Ohio)
- Morgan County 9.07 percent decline (Southeastern Ohio)
- Carroll County 7.92 percent decline (Eastern Ohio)
- Scioto County 7.42 percent decline (Southern Ohio)
Rankings for Ohio Hospitals:
It is easier and more objective to rank areas based on population growth or lost. Ranking the quality of hospitals is more of a task. Ranking health systems is a challenge, with many criteria used to complete the rankings.
But U.S. News and World report has been ranking hospitals for many years. In 2021 -2022 the news outlet analyzed roughly 5,000 hospitals with 175 of these receiving a ranking for at least one medical specialty.
Out of this analysis, the final top three hospitals in the nation were:
[1] Mayo Clinic (Minnesota)
[2] Cleveland Clinic (Ohio)
[3] UCLA Medical Center (California)
In the state of Ohio, over 224 hospitals were looked from all regions in the state. Cleveland Clinic once again performed quite well in the rankings even though the hospital is located in a region of the state that generally lost population.
Here are the top 10 hospitals located in Ohio for 2021-2022 according to U.S. News and World Report:

The above rankings are not entirely surprising. The Cleveland Clinic and the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center both have well-established reputations as world-class hospitals. Five of the top 10 Ohio hospitals on the previous list are Cleveland Clinic hospitals. In Central Ohio, the OSU Wexner Medical Center has continued to expand as the region’s population grows.
The healthcare sector is a major employer and key component of the modern Ohio economy. As Ohio’s population changes over the next decade, will this list change as well. Or will the Cleveland Clinic continue to receive top ratings both nationally and regionally?
